Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. Her work as Queen Latifah in film, television as well as music has earned many accolades. They include an Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations An Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. a police officer. Latifah's parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah means gentle and very gentle. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was aged eight. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was part of the high school basketball squad. At her school's game Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah first began to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a team of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah at the time was awed by her track. The song was released in 1988. Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
